For half a decade, Xy!o has remained an active member of the electronic music scene in San Antonio, Texas. We have had the opportunity to work with Xy!o in the past and, after witnessing his captivating musical performances alongside label artists at our live events such as ODYSSEY, we are proud to welcome him as the newest addition to TIMEWHEEL’s roster.
Without skipping a beat, Xy!o has announced a new single titled “PLANS.” With a flowing ambience generated by crisp vocal harmonies and agile guitar notes paired with a syncopated electronic beat, the track embodies composure and serenity with a fresh approach to chillwave and a presence that is firmly reminiscent of post-rock. The single is set to release via TIMEWHEEL August 2, 2016.
The mind behind Xy!o is that of Shebin Sam, a diverse and talented musician whose taste spans from progressive metal to hip-hop. I spoke in detail with Shebin about his experience, and he had this to say:
“It really started with the local beat battle scene, just hip-hop instrumentals, self-sampled recordings of myself playing guitar over washed out synths, and reverb-drowned 808s and 909s. I later started adding vocals live just to fill the sound with another ‘live instrument’ so to speak. It didn’t take long before I just started singing verses over every instrumental track. And the words would always change, until someone finally asked for the lyrics, and I thought, ‘Well damn I should record this.’ I self-released two EPs on Bandcamp, and then ‘Flyby’ happened.
A really good friend from UTSA who now goes by the producer name Lizarazo released it under his label and I started trying to connect with other musicians, continuing to play live shows with other beat heads, live loopers, DJs, and even full bands here in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin. Since I had first found myself performing with quite a few DJs, my sets turned into an almost seamless experience, where the tracks mixed into eachother to go on being different every time I ended up playing them. I’ve even performed playing guitar live with a drummer for the release of ‘Flyby’.
Then I met Pink Leche, who didn’t have any recorded music but was personally one of my favorite local electronic musicians to perform live. And live was the only way to hear his tunes, so I recorded “House of Relaxation” and released it independently as a split EP with Pink Leche.
It’s been a crazy amount of music creation and accumulation. ‘PLANS’ is one of many tracks to come as I try and sift through the few years of music I’ve made, constantly changing, breathing and expanding into these really personal portraits of self expression that I’ve carved and shaped into something I perform live.”
