For the first time since his arrest late last month for attempted murder and criminal weapons possession, Troy Ave is addressing the night of the shooting. On a new mixtape, Free Troy Ave, the Brooklyn native recounts the incident and its aftermath across a trio of tracks: “Intro (Troy Ave Speaks/Freestyle)”; “Intermission (Troy Ave Speaks)”; and “Outro (Troy Ave Speaks).”
“Pussy n—a tried to assassinate me / I took the gun from him and turned the tables ’round like a G,” he raps early on, suggesting his actions that night were in self defense.
The shooting occurred on May 25 at a T.I. concert in New York, leaving one dead and three, including Troy Ave, injured. Ronald “Banga” McPhatter, who was a friend of Troy’s, was killed. Security camera footage from the venue, released by the police, shows the rapper firing a gun.
Last week, the BSB rapper was formally charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon and was denied bail. A few days later, his lawyer, Scott Leemon, made a plea with the public for help.
“We’re going to ask anyone who was there, anyone who has any information or anyone who knows anyone who was in that VIP room that night — we have set up a special email address,” he said. “We know some people have problems working and talking to NYPD. Help us. Help me defend Troy.”
The next court date is scheduled for this Thursday, June 9.
